Will Doing Yoga Help Me Lose Weight?
Doing Yoga regularly offers many benefits, as listed above. Vinyasa Yoga could be more appropriate for students who have weight loss as a primary intention. Vinyasa Yoga, Warm / Hot Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, are all styles where movement and breath link poses together, build heat and potentially result in greater calorie burn leaving the practitioner quite sweaty. In these classes one may burn over 400 calories in 90 minutes.
Students who commit to a yoga practice of at least 3 times per week, in any of our vinyasa flow classes will definitely increase muscle tone and may loose inches. We recommend supplementing your yoga practice with a sensible diet.
Though individual results will vary, aside from burning calories and strengthening your muscles, yoga also helps you focus on having mind and body awareness. When you bring attention inward, you may notice a shift in your perspective about the types of food you put into your body as fuel, resulting in eating mindfully.
Yoga Burns Fat, by Jan Maddern (Fair Winds, 2002). States “The premise of the present book is that yoga practice has two prime benefits for people wanting to lose weight: one, it improves digestion and so eliminates constipation, water retention, and bloating; and two, it improves blood circulation to major endocrine glands (such as the thyroid and pancreas) that ‘control your appetite, moods and sleep patterns’ . . . as well as improved self-image.”
Keep in mind, if you are new to yoga, very overweight or are quite out of shape, always choose a beginner-level class first.
